Question 1

What is PhotoCraft?

Accepted Answer

PhotoCraft is a free, open-source image editor that clean-room reimplements Adobe Photoshop in pure Rust. It offers a familiar Photoshop-style interface with layers, masks, 27 blend modes and real PSD file support, and runs natively on macOS, Windows and Linux plus in the browser via WebAssembly.

Question 2

Is PhotoCraft really free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. PhotoCraft is open source under a dual MIT/Apache-2.0 license, with the full source code on GitHub. There is no paid tier or subscription.

Question 3

Can PhotoCraft open Photoshop PSD files?

Accepted Answer

Yes. PhotoCraft reads and writes real PSD files — 307 of the 309 files in the psd-tools compatibility suite round-trip correctly — so you can exchange documents with Photoshop users.

Question 4

Can AI agents use PhotoCraft?

Accepted Answer

Yes. PhotoCraft exposes 500+ commands through an MCP server, a CLI and a JSON control channel, so agents like Claude can open files, apply adjustments and export results programmatically.

Question 5

Is PhotoCraft a full Photoshop replacement?

Accepted Answer

Not yet. It is early-alpha software; the project lists AI and generative features as its biggest gap, and some advanced professional workflows are not covered.
