ArtCraft's Excel Alternative: GridCraft, the Free Open-Source Spreadsheet
Looking for ArtCraft's Excel app? It's called GridCraft — a free, open-source spreadsheet built in pure Rust, with ribbon tabs, a formula bar, 500+ calculation functions, PivotTables, 17 chart types and real .xlsx round-trips. Here is what it can do, how it compares to Excel, and how to download it today.
What Is GridCraft? ArtCraft's Excel Alternative
GridCraft is ArtCraft's free, open-source spreadsheet app — an Excel alternative built in pure Rust. It pairs the familiar Excel workflow (ribbon tabs, formula bar, sheet tabs) with 500+ calculation functions, dynamic arrays, PivotTables, 17 chart types and clean .xlsx round-trips. Version 0.5.0 runs on macOS, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and in the browser.
GridCraft is one of the 12 Crafting Apps in the ArtCraft suite, the viral open-source project that recreates Adobe and Office tools in Rust — from PhotoCraft (Photoshop) to WordCraft (Word). The project had earned 3,379 GitHub stars for GridCraft as of October 2026, and the app is officially listed as “in development.”
What sets it apart from most spreadsheet rivals is the calculation engine: a full dependency graph with dynamic arrays and spilling, plus modern function names like LET, LAMBDA, MAP and REDUCE — the same function families Excel added in recent years. And like every ArtCraft app, it is agent-native: AI agents can drive it through MCP.
The spreadsheet workflow
Formula bar, Name Box, sheet tabs, fill handle, colored cell references, conditional formatting and the keyboard shortcuts Excel users already know.
Native XLSX compatibility
Styles, themes, formulas, dynamic arrays, tables, validation, comments, sparklines and PivotTables all round-trip cleanly through .xlsx files.
500+ calculation functions
A full dependency-graph calculation engine with dynamic arrays, spilling, LET, LAMBDA, MAP, REDUCE and table references.
Charts & PivotTables
Seventeen chart types with customizable formatting, plus PivotTables with filters, field lists, layouts and date grouping.
High-performance engine
Copy-on-write workbooks with instant undo snapshots, incremental recalculation and a virtualised grid — built in pure Rust, not Electron.
Agent-native automation
Every ribbon button, menu item and formula can be driven by AI agents over an MCP server, CLI or JSON control channel — and a headless CLI handles scripts.

How to Download and Install GridCraft
GridCraft is free for every platform. The easiest route is the ArtCraft Launcher, but standalone installers, a browser version and a build-from-source option are all available.
- 1
Choose launcher or standalone
Open getartcraft.com/apps/gridcraft. The page offers two options: the ArtCraft Launcher, which installs GridCraft plus every other Crafting App and keeps them updated, or standalone installers for GridCraft alone.
getartcraft.com/apps/gridcraft - 2
Download for your platform
Standalone builds (all at version 0.5.0, with SHA-256 checksums): macOS disk image (Universal, Apple silicon and Intel), Windows 64-bit installer plus portable, 32-bit and ARM64 builds, Linux Flatpak, AppImage, deb, rpm and tarball for x86_64 and ARM64, and a FreeBSD tarball.

Or run it in the browser — or from source
GridCraft also compiles to WebAssembly and runs at getartcraft.com with no install (a self-hostable web build is offered as a zip). Developers can build from source with Rust 1.90 or newer: clone storytold/gridcraft from GitHub and run cargo run --release -p gridcraft.
git clone https://github.com/storytold/gridcraft.git cd gridcraft cargo run --release -p gridcraft
Is GridCraft Ready to Replace Excel?
Not yet. GridCraft is at version 0.5.0 and officially “in development” as of October 2026. The 500-function library, dynamic arrays and clean XLSX round-trips are remarkable for an app this young — but for spreadsheets that run a business, Excel or LibreOffice Calc remains the safer choice.
The practical read: try GridCraft for personal budgets, quick analyses and .xlsx viewing — it is free, installs in minutes and the browser version needs no install at all. Keep business-critical workbooks where they are until the app matures, and expect rapid progress: the ArtCraft project ships new releases at an unusually fast pace.
If you mainly need an image editor rather than a spreadsheet, the suite's most mature app is PhotoCraft, which is already in early alpha with real PSD round-trips.
